Aniefiok Ekpoudom Announces Debut Book ‘Where We Come From’

‘The story of UK Rap, Grime and associated genres reflect an untold story of contemporary Britain. In Where We Come From, I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to document this still unfolding history.’

If we had to choose one person, whose aims and values significantly align with BLK BRIT’s - it’s Aniefiok Ekpoudom. The incredible writer and storyteller works to explore and document modern Britain through longform essays, profiles and now, his debut book ‘Where We Come From: Rap, Home and Hope in Modern Britain’. Described as ‘truly beautiful’, the monumental social history of British Rap and Grime investigates the emergence and evolution of both prominent genres - underground sounds which have quickly become some of the most popular music in the nation.

UK Rap and Grime paint untold and relatable stories of Black and working-class communities. From the unparalleled composition of beats, languages, tempos and structure - its authenticity has created a culture that has impacted generations. Capturing this historical moment, Ekpoudom travelled across the country, taking us through the heart of South London, West Midlands and South Wales. Where We Come From explores ‘how a history of migration and an enduring spirit of resistance have shaped the current realities of these linked communities and the music they produce’.

Speaking on his debut book, Aniefiok Ekpoudom states: ‘Over the past five years, I’ve travelled thousands of miles to report and write this book. I’ve had the honour of listening to people share deeply personal stories, as well as their connected community histories that have informed the life and legacies of these music genres that I love. The story of UK Rap, Grime and associated genres reflect an untold story of contemporary Britain. In Where We Come From, I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to document this still unfolding history.’
