Lizzie Berchie On New EP - ‘Am I An Adult Yet'

BRITISH-GHANaIAN RISING STAR LIZZIE BERCHIE SPEAKS ON NEW EP ‘AM I AN ADULT YET’, IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BLK BRIT. HERE YOU’LL LEARN MORE ABOUT HER MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS AND ARTISTRY GROWTH.

Firstly, I have to ask, *do* you feel like an adult yet?

“Not all the time, I’d say 75% of the time. There’s always a sense of feeling like an adult when you’ve accomplished something - even if it’s as small as doing all my laundry on the weekend.”

This EP seems to be heavily inspired by your current stage in life. What is it about where you are in life now that felt so meaningful to dedicate this EP to?

“Your 20’s is such an interesting stage in life. There’s a new sense of autonomy - nothing like you’ve ever had before. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and I felt like I had to write about it to help me get through some of those emotions.”

Listening to the EP, Don’t Get Ahead of Yourself serves such an important message to those of us in our 20 somethings. What (if you have just one!) is your favourite song on this EP and why?

“It changes all the time, but my current favorite song is ‘Where Did All My Friends Go?’ It’s a topic everyone can resonate with. I’m so blessed to have AMAZING friends and this song is just a reminder to find time in our busy lives to spend some time together.”

This EP to me is reminiscent of sounds by Solange, Cleo Sol and Gaidaa. So, who are your musical inspirations?

“Those 3 names are definitely up there! I would also add Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu - our Neo-Soul queens!”

You released your debut EP last year: how has your personal and musical growth contributed to your latest EP release?

“I think I’m now finding my sound; the first project was born out of a period of exploration. This project felt much more grounded and rooted in a particular sound.”

Your headline show is coming up soon! How does it feel to be here less than 2 weeks from the show?

“I absolutely cannot wait! It’s going to be the first time I perform a lot of these songs and I’m so excited for everyone to hear the music in a live space. Live performances give my songs a whole new life and meaning.”

Your music has been beautiful to hear and we’re excited to see you live. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us Lizzie!
